U.S. CoffeeChamps – Preliminaries

We are pleased to announce the 3rd year of the U.S. CoffeeChamps - Preliminaries! The Preliminaries will be Community Driven Events – fun, low-cost competitions at the local level.

Making Competitions More Accessible

This summer, there will be Preliminaries all across the United States, organized and hosted by coffee communities throughout the US Chapter’s six regions. Hosts will offer compulsory versions of all 5 of the US Coffee Championships!

This summer, there will be Preliminaries all across the United States, organized and hosted by local coffee communities throughout the SCA US Chapter regions. This season, Coffee in Good Spirits, Cup Tasters, and Roaster will join Barista and Brewers Cup at the Preliminary level! Hosts will have 2-3 competitions per event.

For Barista competitors all wares, equipment, and coffee will be provided. Competitors may bring their own wares or grinder, if they would like, but this is not required. Competitors are required to use a Host-provided coffee.

Equipment and coffee will be provided for Brewers Cup competitors. Hosts will have a small variety of manual brewing devices, filter media, and kettle(s), if competitors would like something specific they will need to bring their own. Brewers may bring their own grinder, if they prefer, but this is not required. Competitors are required to use the Host-provided coffee(s).

Coffee in Good Spirits competitors will have equipment, alcohol, and coffee provided for them. Hosts will have a small variety of manual brewing devices, filter media, and kettle(s), if competitors would like something specific they will need to bring their own. Competitors may bring their own grinder, if they prefer, but this is not required. Competitors are required to use the Host-provided coffee(s). The required alcohol(s) for the competition will be provided by the Host, any additional alcohol or beverage ingredients will need to be provided by the competitor.

Cup Tasters competitors only need to bring their palate! Cupping spoons are provided by the Host.

Green coffee will be given to Roaster competitors 2-3 weeks prior to their Prelim. Competitors can pick up their green coffee in person or Hosts will ship it to competitors. Competitors will roast the coffee and bring it with them for the competition weekend. All cupping/tasting equipment will be supplied by the Host!


Online Learning Sessions

The Online Learning Sessions are for competitors and judges who are participating in the Preliminaries. The U.S. Competitions Committees will go over the Rules & Regulations, highlighting any Rules changes. It’s highly recommended for all competitors and judges to attend or watch a recording.

2020 U.S. Barista Prelims

  • 8-24 Competitors per Preliminary

  • 10 Minute Setup Time

  • 7 Minute Competition Time

  • 5 Minute Clean-Up Time

  • 2 Espressos

  • 2 Milk Beverages

  • 2 Sensory Judges

  • 1 Technical Judge

  • 1 Head Judge

  • Top 6 Baristas from each of the Preliminaries will get a guaranteed spot at their choice of the U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions

 
Remaining spots at the 2020 U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions will be Open Registration.

*All wares, equipment, and coffee will be provided for Barista competitors. Competitors may bring their own wares or grinder, if they would like, but it is not required. Competitors are required to use a Host provided coffee(s).

2020 U.S. Brewers Cup Prelims

  • 8 Minute Competition Time

  • 7 Minute Clean-Up Time

  • 2 Individual Brewers

  • 2 Sensory Judges

  • 1 Head Judge

  • Top 4 Brewers from each of the Preliminaries will get a guaranteed spot at their choice of the U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions

 


Remaining spots at the 2020 U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions will be Open Registration.

**Equipment and coffee will be provided for Brewers Cup competitors. Hosts will have a small variety of manual brewing devices, filter media, and kettle(s), if competitors would like something specific they will need to bring their own. Brewers may bring their own grinder, if they prefer, but this is not required. Competitors are required to use the Host-provided coffee(s).  

2020 U.S. Cup Tasters Prelims

4-18 Competitors per Preliminary

  • 5 Triangulations

  • 5 Minute Maximum Competition Time

  • Top 3 Tasters from each of the Preliminaries will get a guaranteed spot at their choice of the U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions

Remaining spots at the 2020 U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions will be Open Registration.

*Cup Tasters competitors only need to bring their pallette! Cupping spoons are provided by the Host.


2020 U.S. Coffee in Good Spirits Prelims

4-12 Competitors per Preliminary

  • 5 Minute Setup Time

  • 6 Minute Competition Time

  • 3 Minute Clean-Up Time

  • 2 Individual Coffee and Alcohol Designer Drinks

  • 2 Taste Judges

  • 1 Head Judge

  • Top 3 Barkeeps from each of the Preliminaries will get a guaranteed spot at their choice of the U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions

Remaining spots at the 2020 U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions will be Open Registration.

2020 U.S. Roaster Prelims

6-12 Competitors per Preliminary

  • 5 Minute Setup Time

  • 5 Minute Competition Time

  • 30 Minutes Audience Service Time

  • Competitors submit 2lbs of their roasted compulsory coffee

  • 2 Sensory  Judges

  • 1 Scoring Head Judge

  • Top 3 Roasters from each of the Preliminaries will get a guaranteed spot at their choice of the U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions

Remaining spots at the 2020 U.S. CoffeeChamps Qualifying Competitions will be Open Registration.
