United States Barista Championship

The United States Barista Championship (USBC) is a platform for baristas to enhance their espresso beverage making skills through an exciting and challenging competition.

In 15 minutes, the barista must prepare and serve espressos, cappuccinos, and a personally designed signature beverage for four sensory judges; all while being assessed on their preparation abilities by two technical judges.

Road to the U.S. Barista Championship

In 2017, there will be two events leading up to USBC that will include qualifying events for all the U.S. Coffee Championships. Baristas will need to compete at a CoffeeChamps event to qualify for the national championship.

There will be 60 competitors at each Qualifying Competition. 36 competitors will move on to the U.S. Coffee Championships, in Seattle, WA from April 21 - 23, 2017. The top 6 competitors from each of the two CoffeeChamps events will go directly into the Semi-Finals round. The next 12 competitors from each Qualifying Competition will be invited to compete in the First Round of U.S. Barista Championship. The winner of the 2017 U.S. Barista Championship will represent the United States in the World Barista Championship, taking place November 9-12, 2017 in Seoul, South Korea!

Important Competitor Registration Information and Updates for Qualifying Events

For the purpose of transparency and access to the competition, we have reduced the rules for regions and number of competitors per company. However, our intent is to have a broad representation of competitors from across the U.S.

We encourage you to hold In-House Competitions to send one competitor per company per competition. Please see a template for In-House Competitions for Barista Competitions here.

Registration will be a two stage process showing live time-stamped entries from all competitor registrants & waitlist. Waitlist competitors will have 48 hours to complete and pay for registration, after which we'll move to the next competitor in line on the waitlist.

Format for qualifying competition

The Qualifying Barista Competition will be a condensed version of the USBC. 4 espressos and 4 signature drinks served to 4 sensory judges (2 scoring judges and 2 non-scoring judges that are either judges in training, audience members, or tasters from other industries such as chocolate, food, or cocktails) along with 2 technical judges and 1 head judge. Competitors will have 20 minutes to practice on their station then 10 minutes to setup and 10 minutes to perform.

Competitors at CoffeeChamps will also have the option to Serve The Audience at the BGA Cafe, this service is not scored, and is a chance for the competitors to engage directly with the audience!
